We are constantly looking for ways to serve the massive images that are created when we digitize the holdings in our collection. Our archival copies are encoded using the JPEG2000 format, which allows us to compress files that can sometimes be as large a 500MB down to less than 10MB. You can download these archival copies from the links below. There are several software packages that can be used to view and work with these images. Some free options include:
- The ExpressView Plugin for Internet Explorer
- IrfanView Image Software
Alternatively, you can now launch our new experimental viewers, using the Zoomify Viewer Software, to zoom and pan high resolution versions of the maps using a simple, intuitive interface. Simply click on the thumbnail for the image you want to view. These viewers require no additional software installation, although you may need to enable pop-ups for this site.
