Genre Tracings
Always add the following genre tracings, when appropriate. Use multiple tracings, when appropriate (e.g., an atlas of nautical charts). Subdivide geographically, not by place of publication, but by place described, and then by date. Use the broadest geographical subdivision possible; e.g., for an atlas of the Pacific Northwest, do not make separate 655s for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, etc., but rather use: Northwest, Pacific.

Dates of maps
- Use the date of publication for the item in hand.
- For questionable dates use the date as it appears in the 260 ‡c field. Drop brackets, question marks, and text such as before, after, between, and ca. Older records using n.d. should be corrected as found to an estimated date.
- If the estimated date is a probable decade or century, use dashes (e.g.173-). If the estimated date spans a decade, then enter using the date as it appears (e.g. 1723-1735).
- If the work is a photocopy, make a chronology tracing for the date of publication of the original.
- If the date of publication has been corrected use the corrected date.
- If the date of publication is a double year use the second year.
Certain form and genre terms (Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library’s Rare Book Team documentation) are always added when called for by local practice. Other applicable standard form and genre terms may be added on a case by case basis when this does not slow down cataloging productivity and are generally retained if present in copy.
Other useful thesauri include:
“California as an island “
For both original and copy cataloging, the Map Dept. will always include the note “Shows California as an island” when applicable.
Make a 655 tracing for “California as an island ‡y [Date of map].” followed by ‡2 local.
